Mars Hill Arts Center Celebrates One Year Anniversary

By Penny Bigelow
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — August 3, 2019 Lisa and John Schmitz, co-founders of the Mars Hill Arts Center, 2811 Mars Hill Drive, opened the Arts Center one year ago on August 3, 2018. The one-year anniversary celebration will be held at the Arts Center on Saturday, Sept 7; more details will follow.
The building was purchased by the Schmitz’s at a bank foreclosure Sheriff’s sale about four years before. The building was in poor condition and had deteriorated into being known as a place for prostitution, buying drugs and other undesirable uses, so the Mars Hill neighborhood is happy to see the building put to better purposes in this underserved southwest area of Indianapolis.
John Schmitz, a 30-year contractor, stripped the building and the roof, rebuilding it to the lovely utilitarian building now used for many purposes. Wife Lisa Schmitz manages the Arts Center, where classes on crafts, art, painting, flower arranging, and pottery for all ages are held on a regular basis. Additionally, the building is used for various community events, e.g., Tae Kwan Do classes, chess classes, civil association and other meetings, in addition to serving as a welcoming place for neighbors. The Arts Center rents the facility for weddings, birthday parties, meetings, etc. Lisa also owns “Where Pigs Fly and Such”, a floral design company noted for wedding and event flower arrangements and design, so she can decorate for such events upon request.
